MYANMAR – Dr Ye Tun Win, Chief Veterinary Officer Director General at the Livestock Breeding and Veterinary Department in Myanmar has reported an outbreak of H5N1 avian influenza at a poultry farm in the Tanintharyi region.
World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) received an immediate notification on 25 July. The outbreak was initially observed on 25 July and confirmed on 23 July after real-time PCR and rapid tests were conducted at the Yangon Diagnostic Laboratory.
According to the OIE, the affected population comprises Lohman layers, 3 months, 5 months and 12 months old. Clinical signs are diarrhea, anorexia, drop in egg production and sudden death.
A total of 5000 birds were found to be susceptible, out of which 3194 cases and deaths were reported. The remaining 1806 birds were killed and disposed of as a precautionary measure.
The OIE reports that a lack of biosecurity of the farm and a small holder has an illegal processing place located in front of the farm.
Some of the control measures applied include:
- Movement control inside the country
- Surveillance outside containment and/or protection zone
- Surveillance within containment and/or protection zone
- Quarantine
- Stamping out
- Zoning and
- Disinfection.
In addition, vaccination has been prohibited and affected birds are not to receive treatment.
The source of the outbreak remains inconclusive.
