MOROCCO – A team of experts from the European Commission (EC) have audited the veterinary services provided by the National Office for the Sanitary Safety of Food Products (ONSSA) to determine whether to allow Moroccan operators to export poultry and fish products to the EU, the office announced on 30 September.

Poultry meat production, one of the most important livestock sectors in Morocco, has been the subject of many monitoring sessions conducted by specialized European committees. Morocco World News reports that the first session was carried out in March 2017, with the latest held 11-22 September.

According to a statement by the ONSSA, the audit aims to ensure that poultry meat production complies with a number of international standards before giving it the green light for export to EU countries.

The audit has focused on evaluating plans for monitoring residue of veterinary drugs, pesticides, and environmental contaminants, assessing their implementation, and appraising the technical skills of ONSSA’s veterinary services.

During this mission, European experts have visited chicken and turkey farms, poultry slaughterhouses, establishments for preparation and processing of meat, aquaculture farms, pharmaceutical companies, and private veterinary cabinets.

“The aim of all these visits was to verify that the marketing and use of veterinary medicines are well controlled by the ONSSA veterinary services,” said ONSSA.

A final audit is scheduled for December 2017 to evaluate the downstream of the sector (establishments for the slaughter, preparation, and processing of poultry meat) and eventually allow the export of Moroccan poultry products.
