BELGIUM – Belgium will set up a task force to examine all possible measures to support the poultry sector following the insecticide-contaminated egg scandal, a spokesman of Belgian Prime Minister Charles Michel confirmed Thursday.

XinhuaNet reports that representatives of the agricultural, trade sectors and the various ministers responsible for this issue, as well as the prime minister and vice prime minister met Thursday morning to study all possible measures in the wake of the scandal.

Although the contaminated eggs scandal breaks out only now, the presence of the red lice pesticide in the poultry sector could well go back more than a year ago. An order form unveiled by a member of the Belgian Parliament shows large quantities of fiproil was imported as early as May 2016.

The Belgian Federal Police on Thursday conducted eight raids in Belgium in connection with the investigation into the contamination of eggs with fipronil, said the Antwerp public prosecutor’s office, quoted by the Belgian press.

Disinfection companies that use the insecticide were mainly targeted.
